  2. Founded in 1898, the Chemnitz Botanischer Garten holds no duplicates from the main Berlin Botanischer Garten which collected, held, exchanged and traded duplicates with other colonial establishments, becoming a form of currency in trans-imperial networks, which relied on reciprocity. During the war, the Berlin institution would sought out other German botanic centres to send duplicates to, for safekeeping in the event the Berlin site gets affected.

    What parameters make a sample a duplicate and what makes it an original? 

    Understanding the nuances of this classification could offer some insight into how that same logic is extended to the logic of territorialization of humans, statehoods and citizenships.

    Though the Chemnitz Botanischer Garten holds no duplicates from this period, they contributed to the project by providing a range of edible plants (leaves, roots, flowers, seeds) that carry a history of economic botany or imperial trade. The selection was made in collaboration with by the institution’s resident botanical expert, Jeanette Quegwer. 

    Produced while at artist-in-residence for Dialogfelder / Klub Solitaer (Chemnitz), each popsicles held a code with a corresponding number found on a list that contained information about the ingredients and the botanicals that they contain. Everybody attending the event were presented with a token number with which they were to find the popsicle assigned to them. If they wished to change or exchange their popsicle, they’d need to do so by negotiating / trading with another person for it. There is only a limited time before a popsicle loses its integrity on a hot day, becoming uncontainable or undesirable. Leaving an imprint on ones insides, its retention via consumption is however, forever. 

    The table cloth on which the popsicles were laid is a 4 colour screen print on cotton fabric – edition of 2.
